About

Deborah combines her professional backgrounds in the arts and medicine to teach, perform and create (less in the social media way and more in the hands-in-literal-clay way) in Seattle, WA and beyond. As a board certified Chinese medicine practitioner who prefers dance studios and forests over conventional clinical practice, she teaches movement and sound as tools for mastering relaxation. She believes there is great power in connecting people back to themselves and to the natural rhythms of the earth.

Testimonials

-Sound-

“Deb created a very safe and welcome space for sound therapy. She spent time sharing her knowledge and practice using the singing bowls, which made sound therapy more meaningful. The bowls are incredible and beautiful! I appreciate that through Deb's classes and teachings I can make connections between the mechanics of sound, movement and energy.” -Jennifer C.

“Deborah is amazing! She’s a wonderful teacher because she truly listens, is nonjudgmental and so kind. I’m handicapped with mobility issues. I came in saying I would not be able to do any work on the floor because I would not be able to get down and up from the floor, but she slowly helped me gain confidence and showed me that there was a way to not only get down and up from the floor using the silks, but how to do a shoulder stand as well!!

Deborah has taken the time to come up with very specific poses and movements which are customized to the limitations I have. She also has a very gentle way of pushing me to try things that scare me. She supports me (sometimes physically) and slowly talks me through each step until I accomplish the action, or if I physically can’t complete it she figures out some way to work around the problem or comes up with something similar that my body can do. Deborah is truly a blessing and I learn so much from her every session.

As far as my experiences during my sessions, they have been nothing short of amazing. Being mobility challenged, gravity is my enemy. When I am in the fabric I am free. I float and move in ways that I cannot on the ground. I am building muscles in places I would not be able to otherwise. I’m getting stronger every week. I am able to be upside down in the bat pose and the decompression on my back is phenomenal. It also makes me feel like my brain is rewiring itself. It seems like it has helped me to calm a good deal of my anxiety. In the last pose, Savasana (or the rest pose), I am able to completely let go. Sometimes I feel like I am floating above myself, totally out of body. There have been other times when it has been as though I was being held and totally encased in love by my ancestors, both ancient and those who have passed in my lifetime. It’s almost always a very spiritual experience.” -April J.

-Taiji Quan and Qigong-

“Not only is Deborah an incredibly skilled and agile teacher, able to think on her feet and manage both small and large groups, but how she delivers information and the teachings that she offers is so beautiful, so unique and so needed. I have felt her authentic care for students and love for teaching and her art since the very first class I took with her.” -Natasha K.

“Working with Deb has been a gift! Through her Taiji Flow and movement classes I have found a stronger mind body connection that I haven't found elsewhere. I leave class feeling energized and present. I appreciate that Deb is responsive and intuitive in the way she plans the flow of each session; it is clear that she considers the backgrounds and experiences of myself and other students. Through her Taiji Flow classes I experience how movement can be powerful and joyful. I am a child of diaspora and am grateful to gain some connection to Chinese roots and traditions through Deb's teaching of taijiquan and qigong.

Because I have aphantasia, it is harder for me to quickly get into a more meditative state or more deeply sense/feel, for example, connection to the earth and space to feel grounding/connection. However, I was able to feel that connection to earth and space and feel/sense the flow of energy during the qigong sequence because we were moving the entire time and [Deb] broke it down step by step. I appreciated that and found that it "clicked" and [I] can understand the power of seeing/understanding energy and movement. I appreciated that Deb offered different types of cues to see what might help me make adjustments and be aware of my body, considering that I can't visualize.” -Jennifer C.

"These classes have empowered me with energy and vitality. I have a feeling of connection with mind, body and spirit. The warm up helps me focus and be more successful with the routine. I like how Debby stresses body alignment and tells us to go at our pace, keep our knees soft and shoulders down. She shares her knowledge and skills with kindness and a generous spirit." -Gloria L.

"This class takes time to warm up the body and decrease injury. It also teaches me to slow down. Doing the right movement is better than speeding up and doing the wrong action. I like also how Debby shows us how we can use the moves in real life to protect ourselves." -Ying-wen C.

"We have learned to control our muscles better, improve flexibility and stability, and feel the energy and slowly learn to handle it. The warm up section is wonderful, it also helps me connect to the environment and connect to my own body." -Miauinn W.

"I have gained better balance and greater calmness. Debby teaches from the heart, not from the book. Really appreciate it." -Helen L.

"My core strength, endurance and balance has improved, and perhaps most important a sense of tranquility experienced during and after the class. I have not previously attended a class whereby the emotional and physical benefits are so apparent. I go to great lengths to attend. No matter how tired I may feel beforehand, I always feel the benefit of having participated. Debby is knowledgeable, patient, and has a sense of humor." -Norah L.
